This reef system is the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere with offshore atolls and several hundred island (Caye), spanning 900 kilometers long. There are approximately 70 different hard coral species and 36 soft coral species have been discovered and identified at the barrier reef and over 500 species of fish and invertebrates live in the area.
